Community Outreach – Simon Says Give

We will be holding a BIRTHDAY PARTY DRIVE with Simon Says Give during our July Monthly Meeting on July 18th.  Please see the details below, and make sure to bring donations with you to the meeting if you can.

To help the next generation of leaders to be unstoppable.

We engage youth who want to help other youth by volunteering their time, talents or treasure. Since 2012 we have supported over 145,000 children. We anticipate supporting 20,000 kids in 2019. Our goal is to impact 2,000,000 kids by 2022 through our programs.

When our Founder Mandi Simon was seven years old she knew she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. A few months before her 8th birthday, she shared her vision to start an organization that helps less fortunate kids celebrate their birthdays. Mandi — and her mother Dina — count their blessings since they were both adopted at an early age. From this, Mandi realized the importance of feeling special and being celebrated. She believed every kid deserved to be celebrated for a couple of hours on their birthday. Given her last name, it was pretty easy to come up with the name “Simon Says Give.” Since then we have blossomed into a value-oriented charity, grown almost entirely by kids.

We are kid-founded, kid-operated and kid focused. On any given day we have forty youth involved in running our day-to-day operations while the adults mentor and teach business skills. We provide lessons in responsibility while developing the next generation of leaders to be unstoppable. Our youth involvement ranges from a few volunteer hours a year to being a member of the Kid Advisory Board to being a Chapter President who leads Simon Says Give in their community.

Each summer our Minnesota Chapter conducts High Five for Supplies in honor of Mandi’s summer birthday. This program supplies kids with backpacks filled with grade appropriate supplies to ensure they are ready for the start of school. High Five for Supplies has grown to be one of our largest in impact, including a Guiness World Recond for the most backpacks stuffed in an 8 hour
period of time.

Each Chapter chooses an issue in their area they feel needs support and attention. While our Minnesota Chapter focuses on school readiness, our South Dakota Chapter focuses on hunger issues. With a goal of making sure that no kid goes hungry, we support food drives and have developed the “Make a Meal, Take a Meal” program. Kids learn to make healthy meals and go home with the ingredients for a second meal to take to their families.

Simon Says Give believes kids deserve a birthday celebration on their special day. Our birthday celebrations are either a hosted party or a “birthday in a box” kit with everything provided for a party of 10 kids. No matter what, each birthday kid receives a gift-in-need and a gift-of-fun.

Every dollar that comes into Simon Says Give gets put to work. Currently, 95% of all donations go directly into programs that support kids. Every donation counts, and we have ways to sponsor or donate specific items for our programs. For example, many of our “Gifts-of-Fun” come from specific donations of in kind gifts or dollars pledged for a specific item. We accept donations online, through the mail or at any of our fundraising opportunities throughout the year.

Our website lists monthly volunteer opportunities. There are large volunteer projects in the summer for individuals and groups through our Birthday Celebration and High Five for Supplies events.
