Member Spotlight: Teri McCaleb.
Teri is the Payroll Manager for AmeriPride Services Inc. She has been a member of the Northstar Chapter for over 20 years and has also served as our Secretary during her time as a member.
How long have you been in payroll?
I started in payroll back in 1996 (21 years).
How did you get your start in payroll?
I was working for Holiday in the corporate office. I joined Holiday’s accounting department after obtaining my B.S. in Accounting from Bemidji State University. Holiday purchased Gander Mountain, but did not want to combine the payroll for two companies. Holiday asked if I wanted to try working in payroll for Gander Mountain, and I agreed.
What do you enjoy most about being in payroll?
Every day is a different adventure. I love learning about the new systems, and being part of upgrading and development opportunities in the HR and Payroll worlds. I also have the opportunity to help other payroll professionals learn and grow.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
It is a challenge to stay up-to-date on the changes in tax laws. Federal and state regulations are changing all the time, and it is difficult to keep up with them.
What is the most interesting question you have been asked about payroll?
This is a tough question. Questions from newly hired, young employees receiving their first pay check are always interesting. They always ask questions about the large tax amounts that have been deducted.
How many different types of payroll systems have you worked with?
Three – ADP, Ultimate Software, and PaySpecialist for Canadian payroll.
How many employees do you currently process payroll for?
About 6,000 employees
What is the best part of being a member of the Northstar Chapter?
The monthly meetings allow me to network and interact with other payroll professionals. It is a great feeling to know that there is always someone you can reach out to within the chapter for questions and help related to payroll.
What is the one piece of advice you can give to new payroll professionals?
Join a local chapter and get involved. This allows you to expand both your network and knowledge about payroll related topics.
Tell me one interesting thing about yourself that others may or may not know about.
I was a disc jockey for my high school’s radio station.
Do you have a favorite sport? Team?
I am a huge baseball fan and love the Minnesota Twins.
What is your ultimate “guilty pleasure?”
I love chocolate cookie dough ice cream.
What is your favorite season? Why?
Summer – I love baseball and the Twins are on.
If you could have dinner with one person whom you have never met, who would this person be? Why?
Mother Teresa – I’m grateful for people that are selfless and put others ahead of themselves and their comfort. I would love to hear about her life.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
Where you want to visit that you have never been before?
My favorite vacation spot is Colorado because I love the mountains. I would love to visit Hawaii as I have never been there before.SHARE
